N2  - Road accidents are generally described in terms of where, when and how they happen and who and what is involved. Several researchers have used a theme of 'land-use' to aid these descriptions. Their work is developed in the present study which describes the accident records of Birmingham radial routes according to the land-use adjacent to the road, the type of carriageway and the daily traffic flows on the roads. The nature of the accident data is studied in detail, and the contribution of these variables to the statistical explanation of four categories of accident is assessed by means of a generalized analysis of variance technique. Estimates are provided of the likely number of accidents at different locations on Birmingham radial routes.<p />
