N2  - This is the first of two papers on the subject of pedestrian crossing behaviour and pedestrian detection. This paper details results of a study made of the changeover of a pedestrian crossing site in Edinburgh from Pelican to Puffin (Pedestrian User-Friendly INtelligent) operation. The study was performed over four sample days, three which were prior to the changeover.<p />
