A1 - Nold, I SP - 252 EP - VL - 34 IS - 5 N2 - Walking is an important mode of transport. This fact was acknowledged in the past by only a small number of traffic engineers and transport planners. Lothian Regional Council, in a joint venture with Edinburgh District Council and with Lothian and Edinburgh Enterprise Ltd, have formulated an action plan for pedestrian improvement in central Edinburgh. For this reason Environmental and Transport Planning (ETP) was appointed to analyze pedestrian volumes and patterns of movement in order to build a database of pedestrian origins, destinations and desire lines within central Edinburgh. Having collected these data, a pedestrian network was developed. Another major part of the study was to identify obstacles and risks to pedestrian movement and to propose measures to overcome these.
