TY - JOUR PY - 1966// TI - Problems of Causal Analysis in Criminology: A Case Illustration JO - Journal of research in crime and delinquency A1 - Gibbons, D. C. SP - 47 EP - 52 VL - 3 IS - 1 N2 - This essay offers some suggestions for improvements in causal analysis of criminology. Recommendations are illustrated through examination of one type of juvenile delinquency, "joyriding." On the basis of conclusions drawn from a review of evidence accumulated to date on this kind of misbehavior, it is suggested that future research be conducted in terms of more abstract concepts to which the conflicting variables found in such sources as official records can be assigned. The deficiencies of these documents for research purposes are pointed out and the need is stated for invention of new measuring instruments for the broader social-psychological dimensions envisaged.
