TY - JOUR PY - 1972// TI - Dual-mode transportation: a case study of Milwaukee JO - Highway research record A1 - Gurski, Paul S. A1 - Stuart, Darwin G. SP - 4 EP - 19 VL - 415 IS - N2 - A socioeconomic case study analysis of the milwaukee metropolitan area, in which a hypothetical dual-mode transit system was compared with a modern, conventional bus rapid transit plan designed to meet the area's needs as forecast to 1990, showed the dual-mode transit concept to be an attractive alternative offering many significant advantages. It was concluded that dual-mode transit systems offer significantly higher service quality (ability to attract riders), higher labor productivity, competitive fares, benefits exceeding costs, greater attainment of regional development goals and objectives, a high degree of operational flexibility to meet varying transportation needs, and, possibly most important, growth potential with good cause to expect a long-term trend of increasing utilization, increasing total benefits, and increasing economic operating margins. It was also concluded that other medium-to-large metropolitan areas nationwide may enjoy even greater relative benefits from this technology.
