SP - 8 EP - 18 VL - 436 IS - N2 - T is expected that bicycle sales will equal if not pass automobile sales in 1973. Adults are rediscovering the virtues of the bicycle: Health, recreation, and ecology. The 50 million bicycles and estimated 73 million riders need safe, efficient, and enjoyable bike paths. Various levels of government are attempting to address this need by developing design criteria for bikeways. This paper will review some of the bicycling activities in the united states at various levels of government, summarize existing planning and design criteria, and recommend an approach for future planning efforts. It is hoped that this information will provide answers to some basic questions and point the way for additional research relating to the emerging needs for bikeways.
