An alarming rise in firearm homicides between 2012 and 2016 in major metropolitan areas has erased progress toward reducing such deaths in the past decade, according to a CDC report that analyzed data from the National Vital Statistics System and the US Census Bureau. In the agency’s last report, the rate of firearm homicides in major metropolitan areas from the years 2009-2010 was 4.3 per 100 000 residents, which was higher than that year’s national rate of 3.7 per 100 000 but lower than the years 2006-2007 rate of 5.2 per 100 000 in major metro areas. The latest report found that gun homicides increased in 43 of the 50 major metropolitan areas studied between the years 2012-2013 and 2015-2016, reaching a combined rate of 4.9 per 100 000 that was higher than the national rate of 4.4 per 100 000 in 2015-2016.
