TY - JOUR PY - 1986// TI - Advanced numerical methods for analysis and design of aircraft structures JO - International journal of vehicle design A1 - Fredriksson, B SP - 306 EP - 336 VL - 7 IS - 3-4 N2 - This paper reviews various numerical and computational tools for the design of aircraft structures, in particular the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). The importance of integrating different disciplines like aerodynamics, stress, loads and computer-aided design (CAD) to form a computer-aided engineering (CAE) environment is stressed. Both the conventional use of FEM in internal loads calculations and the advanced use in optimization and detailed stress analysis of complex structural situations are surveyed. Problems like crack and contact, and also combined crack and contact, analysis are discussed. The paper also discusses pre- and post-processing and the use of computer graphics in the stress analysis of structures.
