TY - JOUR PY - 2017// TI - The effect of overprotective parenting, ego resilience, and social withdrawal on depression among Korean youth JO - Forum for youth culture A1 - Kim, Wonyoung A1 - Seo, Bongeon A1 - Kim, Kyungsik SP - 41 EP - 69 VL - 51 IS - N2 - Using the National Youth Policy Institute's Panel Study on Korean Children and Youth as a basis for our study, we investigated the effects of overprotective parenting, ego resilience, and social withdrawal on depression among Korean youth. More specifically, using structural equation modeling, this study analyzed the sixth wave data of the KYPS which included 2,351 middle first grade students. The results were as follows: Adolescents who feel overprotective parenting had a low level of ego resilience and a high level of depression. Overprotective parenting had a significant impact on youth depression mediating ego resilience and social withdrawal. That is, students who demonstrated a high level of ego resilience were less likely to experience depression and social withdrawal. In addition, ego resilience played a critical role in reducing social withdrawal. However, social withdrawal among students had a mediating effect on increased depression. From the multi-group analysis, social withdrawal appears to have a gender-differentiated effect on depression among Korean youth. Males had bigger effect size than females. These findings indicate that various educational programs for parenting should be designed to address students' internal problems by developing their ego resilience.
