TY - JOUR PY - 2017// TI - Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents JO - Journal of emotional and behavioral disorders (Seoul) SP - 257 EP - 281 VL - 33 IS - 4 N2 - The purpose of this study is to explore frequency, severity of self-injury methods, motivation and the predictors which may influence Non-Suicidal Self-Injury(NSSI: the deliberate behavior of damaging one's own body without intent to commit suicide). For this study, the subjects of the total 680 male and female participants including 369 students of middle school and 311 students of high school completed self report measure of the Fundamental Assessment of Self-mutilation (FASM), STAXI-K, Eysenck Impulsivity Scale(EIS), Cognitive Avoidance Questionaire(CAQ). The results of this study showed that 22.8% of the whole subjects have experiences of NSSI., and the frequency of NSSI, the age initiated the behavior of self-harm, the impulsiveness and the strength of pain were negatively related with NSSI. Also, the self-harm frequency showed a statistically significant correlation with behavioral control deficits, sub-factors of impulsivity, dispersion of attention and a sub-factor of cognitive avoidance strategies. And anger and dispersion of attention explained significantly the increase in frequency of NSSI. This study is meaningful in that it investigated the status, frequency, motivation, and methodological characteristics of NSSI in non-clinical adolescents who had not been studied in the past and explored factors affecting NSSI. In addition, the limitations of this study and the suggestions for further research were also discussed.
