TY - JOUR PY - 2003// TI - Confronting globalization in antitrafficking strategies in Asia JO - Brown journal of world affairs A1 - Samarasinghe, V. SP - 91 EP - 104 VL - 10 IS - 1 N2 - "Trafficking" in human cargo involves the movement of people, women and men, girls and boys, internally and internationally, for work which may be illegal and underworking conditions, which are known to be exploitative. A fundamental issue in thediscourse on trafficking is that while the trafficker is well aware of these ramifications, the trafficked victim has, at best, partial information, and at worst, none at all. At thecore of any definition of trafficking must be the recognition that trafficking is neverconsensual. The United Nations estimates of trafficked persons range between 700,000to two million annually, with an estimated annual global income of around US$7billion. Women and girls in the sex industry account for the highest number of traf-ficked people. The female sex industry is an illegal occupation in the majority of coun-tries worldwide. While it prospers as a lucrative industry, trafficking is also regarded asa deviant enterprise which should be more strictly controlled or suppressed altogether. Keywords: Human trafficking
