TY - JOUR PY - 1980// TI - Witnessing crime: toward a model of public intervention JO - Criminal justice and behavior A1 - Mawby, R. I. SP - 437 EP - 464 VL - 7 IS - 4 N2 - Although the role of the general public in helping the police is frequently recognized as vital by the police themselves, few criminologists have considered witness involvement in any detail. Here, research using official statistics and particularly controlled experimental methods has been described in some detail. Then an attempt has been made to develop a model to aid in our understanding of the choices open to witnesses to crime and the variables which may influence their decisions on whether or not to intervene.
