TY - JOUR PY - 1960// TI - Traffic behavior on an urban expressway JO - Highway Research Board bulletin A1 - Malo, A. F. A1 - Mika, H. S. A1 - Walbridge, V. P. SP - 19 EP - 37 VL - 235 IS - N2 - Traffic behavior is studied in an urban expressway traffic pattern in terms of velocity, spacing, volume and character. A camera was used to acquire data and record traffic patterns on six lanes of the john c. Lodge expressway for eight consecutive days. Functional relationships were obtained for mean velocity, median and modal spacing, lane distribution, and commercial vehicle distribution as a function of volume. A trend relationship was established between annual rear-end collision rate and volume at the time of accident. Quantitative information on the effect of rain and night driving conditions on vehicle velocity was determined.
