N2  - The aim of the study is to give a brief review of the latest literature concerning suicidal behaviour and chronic somatic disorders. By use of Medline available literature have been found concerning suicide risk and cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes, heart and lung disorders, bowel disorders, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis and pain. An elevated suicide risk is well documented in cancer diseases, and in a number of neurological diseases i.e. Multiple sclerosis, Huntington's Chorea, Epilepsy, Stroke and Patients with low intelligence. Patients suffering from diabetes have an increased suicide risk too. In many other common disorders the available knowledge is poor and often based on old studies. Most studies are carried out in Europe, USA, Australia and Japan. Despite the cultural differences the results are very consistent throughout the world. Suicidal behaviour is common among patients suffering from somatic disorders. Health Staff in both primary and secondary care should be aware of this increased risk and should be trained in preventive measures.<p />  <p>Language: en</p>
