Objectives: 1. To study the prevalence and intensity of the burnout syndrome among PSS. 2. To study the correlation between the burnout syndrome and suicidal tendencies. 3. To develop differential programmes of prevention of suicidal behaviour for the different categories of PSS on the basis of the obtained data. Methods: structural interview using special questionnaire, "Diagnostic methods of the emotional burnout" (V.V.Boyko), focus groups. 223 psychiatrists of Eastern Ukraine were examined. Results: Burnout syndrome of different intensity was found in 79% cases. A correlation between burnout syndrome and suicidal tendencies was found. Suicidal thoughts were present with equal frequency in all the burnout stages: very frequent - 2%, rarely - 16%, hard to say - 9%, never - 73% of doctors. Significantly more frequent suicidal thoughts were recorded among doctors who had under 5 years and between 10-19 years work experience. Prevention programmes were developed. They were oriented to the educational strategies of suicide prevention including informational and educational needs. Strategies of prevention and correction of the burnout syndrome among PSS in the high suicide risk group were developed. Conclusion: It is necessary to practice prevention and correctional programmes that will focus on the staff, on the therapeutic ideology and medical subculture, on the correction interrelations among staff, and on the peculiarities of the work with mentally ill people.
