TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - Structural equation model for parasuicidal behaviour JO - Psychiatria Danubina A1 - Santos, Jorge A1 - Saraiva, C A1 - Veiga, F SP - 147 EP - 147 VL - 18 IS - Suppl 1 N2 - Aims: To find a structural equation model for parasuicidal behaviour in order to better conceptualise attempted suicide Method: The sample of 165 individuals who were admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department after parasuicidal behaviour was compared with a control group with the same size, age, sex and schooling. Both were assessed through tests to evaluate mood, self-concept, coping, locus of control, personality and psychopathology. Finally, we used Amos 5.0 to find a structural equation model for parasuicidal behaviour. Results: The sample of 165 parasuicidal individuals was mainly composed by females (76%). Most of them were repeaters (55%). We found significant correlations between attempted suicide depression, hopelessness, low self-concept, low coping, high externality, high neuroticism and psychopathology. Conclusions: In spite of significant relations between several of sociometric/psychometric characteristics and the parasuicidal behaviour, depression emerged as the most relevant factor within the structural equation model for parasuicidal behaviour.
