TY - JOUR PY - 2014// TI - Suicide prevention: a complex global challenge JO - Lancet psychiatry A1 - Hawton, Keith SP - 2 EP - 3 VL - 1 IS - 1 N2 - Suicidal behaviour is a major focus of the first issue of The Lancet Psychiatry. Although prevention of suicide has always been a key consideration in psychiatric practice, its emergence as a broader public health challenge demanding national action is quite recent. 1 Increased attention to this issue indicates recognition of the global importance of suicide, with nearly 1 million suicides estimated to occur every year worldwide. 2 Many countries now have suicide prevention strategies 3 and 4 and for the past few years World Suicide Prevention Day has been held annually on 10 September.
