N2  - A 5-point program for preventing wrong-way driving was initiated by the California Division of Highways after 53 people died in wrong-way accidents on the state's freeway system in 1970. Point 1 was to reexamine the past 9 years of research on the problem, including devices used to prevent it: Pavement bumps, warning signs, etc. Point 2 called for the review of research done by other states. Point 3 was to identify locations where wrong-way movements are occurring and who is making them. Field investigations of freeway ramps were made under point 4 to find the optimum signing and placement of signs and guide markers in the vicinity of ramp terminals. Point 5 will be continued camera surveillance of off-ramps to detect wrong-way.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
