N2  - Unlike the traditional psychotherapeutic relationship commonly marked by trust and a client set agenda, the treatment of paedophilic behaviour requires the establishment of clear boundaries and an explicit value stance in the early phase of treatment. This commonly produces a defensive reaction in the client, whose commitment to treatment is precarious at this stage. Challenge at this time can evoke fears of humiliation or punishment and can reinforce thoughts of withdrawal from therapy. In order to address this issue and facilitate the early phase of treatment, a treated male sex offender in the role of a 'paraprofessional' was enlisted to co-facilitate a sex offender group treatment programme. The dynamics of the relationship between the professional, the paraprofessional and the perpetrators are described and the benefits and cautions of using a treated sex offender in this role are discussed.<p />
