N2  - Despite several high profile cases, sporting organisations, other than those directly involved in allegations, have been reluctant to respond to the issue of child abuse. Achieving acceptance of the reality of child abuse in sport has been a slow and difficult process but the establishment of the Child Protection in Sport Unit marks a significant change in attitude within sport. The Unit, jointly funded by Sport England and the NSPCC, can be seen as an effective model for changing attitudes and practice and reducing the risks of abuse. This article describes the events leading up to the formation of the Unit and considers the strengths and limitations of the relationship between statutory child protection systems and those emerging in voluntary sport.<p />
