TY - JOUR PY - 1981// TI - Traffic accident costs borne by the state of Michigan JO - HSRI research review A1 - Flora, J. D. SP - EP - VL - 12 IS - 3 N2 - An HSRI research study was conducted to estimate the various direct costs borne by the State of Michigan as a result of traffic accidents. Such figures are useful for assessing the benefits of proposed highway safety countermeasures. Total direct costs to the state were estimated to be $21.5 million annually. Of ten cost components, the four largest are $8.9 million in state Medicaid payments to hospitals, $3.6 million in litigation and judgments, $3.1 million in aid to dependent children of accident victims, and $2.7 million in unreimbursed costs of repairing roadway damage caused by traffic accidents.
