N2  - Levels of fear of crime across different modes of public transport in Mexico City are analysed, using data from the 2007 Survey on Victimization and Institutional Efficacy conducted in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. Approximately 36 per cent of public transport users reported feeling either unsafe or not very safe. Ordinal logistic regression results showed that fear of crime was similar across transportation modes and was higher for those travelling more than 30 min. In addition, fear of crime in public transport was higher among crime victims, younger users, individuals with a poor opinion on local police and those with higher levels of fear of crime in their neighbourhood of residence. These findings suggest that fear reduction policies are an important partner of crime reduction policies in increasing quality of life, and that public transport is an important, although neglected, dimension of such policies.
