N2  - Situational crime prevention techniques and focused deterrence approaches have been used successfully in recent years to address various crime problems. Although these two crime prevention responses developed separately, we argue that they are in fact compatible and that there is merit in attempting to bridge these areas of research and practice. The following essay describes each approach briefly and demonstrates how focused deterrence approaches embody elements of situational crime prevention. We present arguments for locating focused deterrence approaches within the framework of situational crime prevention, suggesting that such a conceptualization not only provides innovative insight into the implementation of situational crime prevention techniques, but also couches focused deterrence in a framework that uses a methodology for continual improvement and widespread influence.
