N2  - This study was intended to develop a new methodology to evaluate the Pain, Grief and Suffering (PGS) of the accident-victims and their relatives, which is a part of the accident-cost analysis. Data was collected from accident-victims and their relatives, from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Using the Likert scale, a questionnaire was prepared and the collected data was statistically processed. In the total PGS, the victims' and relatives' contributions were separately determined Regression equations were developed connecting PGS and Gross Loss of Output for each income-group and each type of accident and these equations were applied in an accident-cost study to find out the effects of PGS on total road accident-cost. Hitherto the works on accident costing have considered, the contribution of PGS to total accident cost, as a percentage of the Gross Loss of Output (GLO). Or in other words, pain, grief and suffering are considered to have a close relationship with the income of the victim. But this is a concept, which cannot be accepted, and hence it is necessary to develop a more reliable method for the quantification of PGS.<p />
