N2  - Between 1976 and 1985, 39 patients with two or more injuries to more than two abdominal organs received medical treatment. Almost 76% of abdominal injuries are road accident related. 55% are injuries to two or more than two abdominal organs. During a five-year period, the road accident related abdominal injuries doubled in comparison with the preceeding five-year period. Men are found to be involved in road accidents with injuries five times more often than women. Drivers seem to run the highest risk (74% of all casualties) among all road users. Almost 76% of all road accidents studied occured on the Zagreb-Belgrade motorway. On admission to hospital, 41% of casualties were suffering from haemorrhages, haemorrhages with perforation were found in 41% of admitted casualties and perforation in 18% of admitted casualties. Injuries to the liver, spleen and peritoneum show the highest incidence. 50% of admitted casualties had sustained injuries to two organs and 41% of admitted patients to more than three organs. Together with injuries to abdominal organs, 82% of admitted casualties had sustained injuries to the skeletal system. 74% of admitted casualties were in a state of heavy shock. Fatalities were mostly due to heavy loss of blood (74%) while the death rate in the study was 30%.<p />
