TY - JOUR PY - 2011// TI - The Davis bicycle study: Why do I bicycle but my neighbor doesn't? JO - Access A1 - Handy, Susan L. SP - 16 EP - 21 VL - IS - 39 N2 - Many factors influence the decision of whether to travel by bicycle. Infrastructure can be critical, with facilities such as on-street bike lanes, bike bridges, and off-street bike paths encouraging people to ride bicycles. Davis, California, has a robust bicycle infrastructure and a corresponding high percentage of riders but even in Davis, many choose not to ride. Research shows that distance may influence the decision to ride, but for many, individual attitudes are the deciding factor. Comfort with bicycling, and agreeing with the statement, "I like riding a bike," were among the most important factors distinguishing residents who bike from those who do not.
