The ANN based software, flame retardant expert system FRES 2.0 for FR polymer formulation design, was developed and used in this study. The optimized output gives LOI values in accordance with experiments. It follows that the three-layer BP (back-propagation) network based modeling proved to be most useful in dealing with problems with serious non-linearity encountered in formulation design of flame retardant polymer compounds.
