This research applies the methods and theories of cognitive science to the study of respondents' answers to autobiographical and attitude surveys. This article describes the events that led up to the initiation of research, describes the history of the field, and overviews the cutting edge of research. Finally, the article offers perspectives on the benefits of collaborative research to both cognitive science and survey research, and the prospects for future research.
