TY - JOUR PY - 2000// TI - The self-concept in institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly people JO - Journal of environmental psychology A1 - Antonelli, Elena A1 - Rubini, Vittorio A1 - Fassone, Cristina SP - 151 EP - 164 VL - 20 IS - 2 N2 - Although the topic of relocation of the elderly has generated considerable research, few studies have investigated its consequences on the content of the self-concept and on the levels of self-esteem. Sixty institutionalized and sixty non-institutionalized elderly men and women participated in an investigation which assessed their spontaneous self-concept by means of the Twenty Statements Test and their level of self-esteem by means of the Rosenberg Scale. The results indicate that the institutionalized elderly have a more negative self-concept, lower levels of self-esteem, and a more restricted inter-personal self.
