SP - 137 EP - 150 VL - 14 IS - 2 N2 - The background to the introduction of B?Double vehicles into the state of New South Wales, Australia, is given. A trial to assess their likely impact and determine appropriate conditions for their operation is described. This indicated that B?Doubles could be introduced without adverse effects on the road traffic system provided that there was some form of control over their operation. A route?specific permit system was adopted, and comprehensive guidelines were developed to specify the requirements for routes, vehicles and drivers, and set out permit procedures. The guidelines and the issues of concern raised during their development are outlined. Associated issues and influences concerning the future for B?Double operations are discussed. It is concluded that the trial and subsequent developments have assisted in introducing B?Double operations safely and efficiently.
