TY - JOUR PY - 1991// TI - Family day care: A theoretical basis for improving quality JO - Early childhood research quarterly A1 - Fischer, Jan Lockwood A1 - Eheart, Brenda Krause SP - 549 EP - 563 VL - 6 IS - 4 N2 - This study establishes a theoretical basis for improving caregiving practices in family day care. Providers' demographic characteristics, training, support networks, business practices, and stability of services were examined relative to their caregiving practices. A conceptual model was proposed and then tested with data collected through telephone interviews with 177 family day care providers and home observations of 36 providers. Multiple regression procedures were used to analyze the data. Results indicate that providers' child care training, affiliation with support networks and years of schooling explain 69.82% of the variance in ratings of caregiving practices.
