SP - 249 EP - 262 VL - 6 IS - 2 N2 - The purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of family background and child care quality to preschool children's cognitive, language, and social development. One hundred 3- to 5-year-old children from 10 different child care centers participated. The mothers of each child were interviewed to obtain information regarding family background, and child care quality was measured via several state licensing instruments and the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (Harms & Clifford, 1980). Results revealed that family background variables were significant predictors of three measures of children's cognitive and language development. Child care quality variables significantly predicted social adjustment and were a marginal predictor of sociability.
