N2  - The aim of this study was to collect isometric muscle strength data and anthropometric dimensions from a sample of the Chinese population. These basic data are important for workplace, task, and equipment design. The study involved collecting data from a sample of 146 male and 47 female subjects in the city of Ningbo in China. Five measures of muscle strength were collected: left and right hand grip, arm lift, shoulder lift, and torso pull strengths. The mean female strengths were about 50% lower than the male values. There were several significant positive correlations between anthropometric measures and isometric strength. Comparisons between the results of this study and those from Chinese and USA studies available in the literature are provided.Relevance to industryStrength and strength data are important for designing workplaces, equipment, and tasks. The data reported provide a set of such data for a sample of Chinese subjects.<p />
