TY - JOUR PY - 1991// TI - Evaluation of seating: The influence of hip and knee angles on spinal posture JO - International journal of industrial ergonomics A1 - Eklund, J A1 - Liew, M SP - 67 EP - 73 VL - 8 IS - 1 N2 - Large variations in sitting postures and seating are demonstrated in industry. This is largely due to the requirements of the task and the workplace design. Hip and knee angles are important determinators of lumbar posture, and thereby influence the probability of discomfort and disorders of the back. The influence of hip and knee angles on spinal posture was therefore evaluated in sitting and lying on the side. The results showed that hip flexion is 3-8 times more powerful than knee flexion in changing the lumbar curvature. The results are presented in graphs which allow evaluation of seating arrangements in industry to be made in terms of spinal posture and range of spinal motion.
