N2  - Seafaring is recognised as a dangerous occupation. Recent industry attempts to manage risks to individuals, ships and the environment centre on the International Safety Management (ISM) code. The code identifies risk assessment as a key objective. However, research presented here demonstrates that perceptions of risk may vary between different occupational groups in organisations in the maritime sector. Structural factors related to traditional work arrangements and socio-economic factors associated with the processes of globalisation pose a challenge to the successful implementation of ISM in particular, and to the realisation of effective safety management systems in a highly globalised workplace.<p />
