N2  - Participants at the Beijing Conference, scheduled for September 1995, will review the progress women have made since the 1985 Nairobi Conference on the Advancement of Women. They will also identify ways to address the alleviation of women's poverty, elimination of violence against women, promotion of their economic independence, and their full participation in decision-making and power structures. An exceptional characteristic of the Beijing Conference is the intensity and scale of the preparatory work at the national, regional, and international levels. The UN Division for the Advancement of Women, serving as the Secretariat for the Conference, has coordinated the preparatory work. Each regional conference had adopted a regional platform for action listing the concerns of the region. The draft Platform for Action presents 10 strategic objectives revolving around alleviation of poverty; equal access to quality education and training, health care, and other like services; elimination of violence against women; increased participation of women in conflict resolution; promotion of economic independence; and full participation in decision-making and power structures. The UN's International Labor Organization (ILO) participated in preparations for the Beijing Conference at all levels. It encouraged labor ministries and workers' and employers' groups to take part in conference preparations. ILO provided data on women's employment to the regional preparatory conferences as well as to the various UN system-wide documents and preparatory efforts. It convened numerous workshops at regional conferences. ILO has also prepared several publications, working papers, and information-dissemination activities towards the Beijing conference.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
