N2  - This paper reviews the basic principles of forensic documentation, evidence collection and preservation, forensic photography, and accurate wound identification, as well as tips on working with police and on testifying in court. Intimate partner abuse is a cyclic process that often escalates in frequency and severity over time. It is a major public health crisis that requires numerous identification and intervention strategies to protect the survivors and the children who reside and witness such violence in their homes. Issues of safety for the patient, her children, family and friends, and for health care staff should guide all clinical interventions as battered women patients struggle with the often difficult and dangerous choices involved in breaking free of violent and controlling relationships.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
