TY - JOUR PY - 1973// TI - Alcohol countermeasures: Solid rock and shifting sands JO - Journal of safety research A1 - Bryk, JA A1 - Driessen, GJ SP - 108 EP - 129 VL - 5 IS - 3 N2 - This paper reviews recent findings and issues in several areas of alcohol countermeasure research and application. The Alcohol Countermeasures Program of the US Department of Transportation, including primary results from eight alcohol safety action projects is covered. Fatal accidents decreased 97% and fatalities decreased 86% in ASAP as compared to non-ASAP areas when considering data from 1970 to 1971. Other sections deal with laws and their enforcement, public education in mass media campaigns, rehabilitation, instrumentation, drinking pedestrians, and the lognormal distribution controversy. This report also contains a listing of more than 100 countermeasures. The authors recommend that a cause chain analysis be applied to all proposed countermeasures in order to specify potential payoff.
