They are the third leading cause of death in the pediatric population (18 years and less), behind motor vehicle crashes and cancer in the United States. This article discusses epidemiologic factors, the pathophysiologic characteristics of submersion injuries, treatment, outcome identifiers, and methods used for prevention.
