TY - JOUR PY - 1919// TI - Revivals, sex and holy ghost JO - Journal of abnormal psychology (1906) A1 - Schroeder, Theodore SP - 34 EP - 47 VL - 14 IS - 1-2 N2 - Attempts to provide a psychogenetic understanding of religious experience. The analysis is based on observations of a pastor with his audience in New England. It is suggested that religious ecstasy is akin to sexual emotions. The experience of religion of a sane normal person is inhibited by the persistence of the consciousness of the demands of the ordinary environment. The varieties of physical manifestations of revival excitement are explainable by varying degrees of sexual repression, sensitiveness, or shame, and the resultant varying degrees of intensity in the excitement. Discusses the factors operative in checking extravagant manifestations of impulsive tendencies. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
