TY - JOUR PY - 1988// TI - Safe speeds on curves: a historical perspective of the ball bank indicator JO - ITE journal A1 - Merrit, D. SP - 15 EP - 19 VL - 58 IS - 9 N2 - The ball-bank indicator has been accepted by a majority of the states as a procedure for the determination of safe driving speeds on curves. The criteria that were developed in the late 1930s and early 1940s are still basically used today, practically unchanged from the initial recommendations. Since that era, although there have been dramatic improvements in highway pavement surface materials and quality of construction of both pavements and vehicles, this latest survey shows that the ball-bank indicator is still an accepted method for determining maximum safe speed on curves. The ball-bank indicator criteria used today are shown. This article reviews the history of the ball-bank indicator use and current status.
