SP - 35 EP - 37 VL - 54 IS - 10 N2 - The Traffic Services Division of the Traffic Authority of Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia, commenced a planned pedestrian safety program in 1974, including engineering, education and enforcement. Halifax, as many other urban areas, realized the seriousness of the pedestrian accident problem, particularly the high number of pedestrian injuries in the 5-9 year old age group. This program included the use of "zebra" crosswalks, special crosswalks installed only where necessary to guide and control pedestrians in specific corridors.
