TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - Effect of bus stop on traffic flow on an urban corridor: a case study JO - Indian highways A1 - Karuna, S. A1 - Sharma, U. SP - 43 EP - 52 VL - 34 IS - 7 N2 - This article describes the use of road capacity analysis in investigating the effect of newly-installed bus stops along an already heavily-trafficked road in the city of Chandigarh, India. Traffic volume data was collected and analysed, showing greater traffic numbers on weekdays on the stretch of road with bus stops. A spot speed study was carried out and speed flow equations generated using linear regression analysis for all vehicle types. Free speed on a stretch of road without a bus stop was higher than in the presence of a bus stop. The recommendations from the conclusions of the study include that bus bays should be provided; existing traffic regulations should be enforced; the road should be widened; heavy vehicles should be prohibited during peak hours; and entry and exit points from the road should be closed at their current location.
