TY - JOUR PY - 1990// TI - Traffic growth on road system - a review JO - Indian highways A1 - Sarna, A. A1 - Agrawal, I. SP - 29 EP - 40 VL - 18 IS - 2 N2 - Traffic growth rate is an important factor in designing road systems and taking investment decisions. The author reviews the various growth rates used in highway projects across India and suggests suitable growth rates for use in future projects. Factors influencing traffic growth rates are examined and include changes in distribution and magnitude of population, changes in Gross Domestic Product and personal income, changes in industrial production and technological advances. Different types of traffic growth rates are identified and made uniform, differential, varying, average, deferred and qualitative growth. Studies conducted in India are then briefly reviewed and the traffic growth rates utilised noted. Significant variations are found for inter-urban, intra-urban and rural situations but national and regional trends are more clear cut. Tentative suggestions are made for traffic growth rates and areas where further work would be useful, e.g. regular traffic counts are outlined.
