N2  - This article provides information on the use of flashing light emitting diode (LED) units on stop signs. The Texas Transportation Institute studied the effectiveness of flashing LED stop signs in 2004 at two locations, analyzing compliance at a standard stop sign versus the flashing LED sign. The flashing LED reduced the rate of vehicles that did not fully stop by nearly 30 percent. It cut by more than half, the number of vehicles that ran the stop sign. Based on that study, the Virginia Department of Transportation, decided to install a 48-inch flashing LED stop sign at an intersection where accidents are frequent on Route 151. The VDOT is collecting data at the site for its own study, which will be completed in early 2007.<p />
