N2  - Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the first aid knowledge and performance of drivers who intervene with the injured patients in Turkey. Methods: A semi-structured interview consisting of 22 questions was applied to 300 drivers between January-May 1997. First aid kits of the vehicles were examined also. With the help of this semi-structured interview, we evaluated drivers' knowledge of artificial respiration, cardiac massage, tourniquet application, and transport of injured patients. Results: Drivers' first aid knowledge and performance are inadequate. They would be harmful to the injured patients, and first aid kits are insufficient and even not available in the vehicles. Conclusion: First aid training must be spread out and compulsory first aid lessons in private driving courses may effectively use various manikins. Before getting the driving license, candidates' first aid knowledge may be checked. National and private broadcasting programs for traffic safety should be organized more often. Volunteer social and occupational organizations should support this attempt.<p />
