N2  - An attempt is made to analyze recent demographic trends in the Sudan. The main source of data is the census of 1983 and provisional results from the 1993 census. Described first are population trends from 1956 to 1973, a period of relative demographic stability. Next, the author reviews trends from 1973 to 1983, a period of moderate change.
