TY - JOUR PY - 2008// TI - A comparison of effects of four modes of death on health, depression and grief of the bereaved JO - Nippon Koshu Eisei Zasshi A1 - Miyabayashi, Sachie A1 - Yasuda, Jin SP - 139 EP - 146 VL - 55 IS - 3 N2 - PURPOSE: To evaluate how the mode of death affect health and emotional reaction. METHOD: We analyzed 178 responses to a questionnaire from the bereaved. The respondents were divided into 4 groups: bereaved by suicide, accident, acute death (less than a day from onset), and illness-related death (less than a year from onset). RESULTS: The suicide, accident and acute death groups indicated averages higher than or as high as the clinical threshold on both general health scale and depression scale. Differences among groups appeared on all but the subscales of somatic symptoms and of anxiety & insomnia. DISCUSSION: The cause-of-death factor has an effect on the bereavement reaction. The effect seemed more apparent on emotion than on physical health.
