N2  - This essay reviews some recent literature on Poland, referring both to books published before and after the imposition of martial law in December 1981. The discussion is primarily focused on the economic factors behind the political upheaval of 1980-1981, the rise of Solidarity, and consequences of the martial law. Criticism of some attempts at interpretation or explanation of the above processes is supplemented by suggestions concerning the efficient use of social science theories for that purpose.<p />
