%X An account is given of two serious lower limb fractures that occurred during a practice karate contest, their mechanism and their orthopaedic management. Apart from the type of blow known as 'the sweep', which is not dangerous if correctly performed or received, it is recommended that further injuries of the same kind should be avoided through sufficient training, the presence of a sports physician during each combat, and adeqauate protection of exposed parts.<p />
